estoria | 5/09 - this is probably not a great idea

What: Upon occasion and from time to time, Yona sneaks into the Entertainment District...

[Yona has a secret, one that she guards zealously, even from Hak. Actually, especially from Hak. Sometimes, when she tells him she's going to the archery range to practice ... she doesn't. Sometimes, in the evenings, she goes instead to the Entertainment District. She leaves her CereVice behind and watches her back, making sure to take elaborate routes to avoid being followed.

Hak can never, never find out she does karaoke.

Yona's aware that she's a terrible singer (Hak, for one, never lets her forget it). In her homeworld, she rarely even bothered to try. As a spoiled princess, she never had to try; as a fugitive on the run, she was actively discouraged from it. But here in Cerealia, she is neither; she's just a regular person who keeps busy and yet occasionally has free time on her hands and sometimes wants to sing.

Discovering karaoke was like a revelation to her. She didn't have to be good at singing — almost nobody performing in karaoke night could sing! Being good at singing wasn't the point. The point was just to have fun.

[Yona's not exactly the sneakiest person in the world. She definitely looks suspicious as she makes her way through the streets, clearly on high alert. Perhaps you decide to follow her to see if she's up to no good...]

[She's at the bar, trying to order a juice. Man all these drinks have funny names ... Help a girl out?]

[The music played at this karaoke place is completely alien to Yona — but that certainly doesn't stop her from getting up on stage and singing at the top of her lungs. The results are ... interesting to say the least.]

You work at a club? [GASPU!] That sounds like such fun! What were you doing?

I'm a detective. I don't think I'm actually old enough to work at a club.

[Also Minamoto would cry and wonder where he'd gone wrong when raising her.]

I was just looking into a case. One of those boring infidelity ones.

How old do you have to be to work in a club? [There aren't really such rules about age where Yona is from, so the concept is completely alien to her.

She'll register the detective comment in a moment.]

You have to be eighteen.

...You're not thinking of working here, are you?

[Because she doesn't think Yona should be doing...that... (what would Minamoto say if she let her do that...)]

Oh no! I'm really happy at the archery range. I just like singing here. You should go up on stage!

[Go up on the stage and sing??]

....Well...I guess?

[She doesn't sound very sure.]

[Yona's going to take that as a yes.]

All right, let's do this!

[She grabs Shiho's wrist and dashes up towards the stage.]

Wh-

[Shiho doesn't get to finish when Yona dashes up on the stage with her. But, well....she's fine with this. Yona looks excited and this reminds her so much of Kaoru.]

Let's see — oh, this one sounds like fun!

[Yona's never heard it before; she doesn't know the lyrics; and she can't really sing to begin with. This is going to be a disaster.]

Hm, yeah!

[Yona has such cute taste in music.

Not that Shiho has ever heard this song either. (Because their author liked using their opening and closing themes, and their character image songs for what was likely copyright reasons.) But at least the psychometry means she knows how the melody goes and what the lyrics are.]

Ready?

[Because the opening bars of the song are starting up.]

Ready! [Except the opening bars have already started, so Yona jumps in late — and really terribly out of tune.]

DON'T THINK ABOUT IT! JUST MOVE YOUR BOOTY! LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!

[Shiho is (thankfully...??) not too surprised that Yona is both late and off-tune. With a laugh, she starts back on rhythm.]

Sing, oh, ey, oh! Just move those left feet! Go ahead, get crazy!

[Yona jumps and bounces as she sings, eventually getting so lost in the song that she's not even really singing anymore, just making vaguely song-like noises while she dances wildly. Her dancing is, surprisingly enough, much better than her singing. Hopefully that will be enough to prevent them being boo'ed off stage ...]

[Shiho will destroy anyone that tries to boo them off the stage. Because how could anyone boo Yona off when she's so excited and happy? (Or maybe this is the psychometer in her talking again, the one who prized intent over anything.)]

I feel better when I'm dancing, yeah, yeah!

[She isn't much of a dancer but she's smiling as Yona dances, making motions with her hand to tell her to keep doing it.

Some of the patrons are tapping their feet, at least?]

[Whether it's Yona's rambunctious dancing or Shiho's singing or the general drunkenness going around, but by the end of the song everyone in the audience is cheering.]

ISN'T THIS GREAT?!?

[Shiho takes a moment to catch her breath before smiling right back at Yona.]

It is!

[And she'd actually had fun because she was still only sixteen years old despite how much of an adult she tried to be.]

You were great, Yona. I didn't know that you could dance. [Despite having read her with psychometry because that hadn't been something she was looking for.]

Well I was a princess. [Normally she doesn't bring that up or even think about it much, but she's riding high on karaoke energy.] And sometimes I masquerade as a dancer when we go undercover.

Don't princesses usually learn ballroom dancing, though? [What kind of princess are you basing your assumption on, Shiho...

What she doesn't ask is what Hak thinks of when Yona goes around as a dancer because this is her choice and hey, if Yona is doing that then she probably knows what she's doing. Girls are way stronger and more resourceful than people give them credit for, okay!]

A dancer, huh. That sounds pretty cool.

[Mostly Hak just makes fun of her, the jerk. At Shiho's question, Yona shoots her a puzzled look.]

What's ballroom dancing?

It's usually a waltz but there are other dances you can do too. I can show you later if you want. You get to dance with a partner and some people consider it really cultured and romantic.

[Not that Shiho dances with people often because of her psychometry. She's lucky if people don't overreact about her being able to read their mind.]

I would love that! I've never heard of those dances.

They're pretty fun! I was going to help Kaoru-chan too, so this way you guys could learn together?

[That and she has the suspicion that Kaoru and Yona would get along splendidly.]
