PHASE I [ ❓❓❓ ] And then the Flamines are there.
They just appear, suddenly, as if from nowhere. They’re a race of mercenary aliens, and fighting is all they know -- they’re definitely not going to be easy to kill by any means. They seem to have a natural resistance to magic: aside from very specific types of magic (in particular, light magic and anything highly spiritual), they absorb it. Light magic and spiritual magic can harm them, but it will take a lot to take one down.
They can be stabbed, if you can get that close.
But good luck.
Of course, they look like nondescript black shapes with masks until you knock the mask off...and then you can see the true shape of the Flamines.
They’re here to kill you all. :)
PHASE II [ ❓❓❓ ] As if that isn’t enough… it seems the Flamines’ arrival was the last straw for Cerealia and the Nexus Code. There’s a tear in the sky, and from it… the Nexus Code, where all of the lost friends from before, can be seen. It can be entered, even, though remaining there too long can be detrimental to your health.
But people are there.
Old friends, strung up and lifeless, can be seen there, unmoving.
And…
Then some of them move. They open their eyes. They remember how to breathe. And they’re able to return, able to stagger their way back into Cerealia and take their first breath of air in a long, long time.
Welcome back to the chaos of Cerealia, friends.
Unfortunately, you’ve got nothing but the clothes on your back while murderous aliens are rampaging, so hopefully you’re able to think fast. It’d be unfortunate to die so soon after coming back.
As for spiritual and magical characters who were not in the Nexus Code...well, when they return, they’ll find that they’re covered in old, dried blood, and their clothing might have tears in it, as if from a knife.
There are no scars, though, and they’re otherwise fine. Strange.
PHASE III [ ❓❓❓ ] As if this chaos isn’t enough… there are also the masks. Regardless of whether or not characters were around to receive them the first time, regardless what they did with them before, the masks will suddenly reappear in your characters’ hands. They can be tossed aside, but they’ll reappear again eventually, unable to be truly shaken.
Characters who received them before will receive the same mask they had before.
Characters who didn’t receive them before will receive a mask according to the trait that’s more prominent for them.
Either way...it’ll have a profound effect on the Flamines.
They will go after any character with a broken mask in a bloodthirsty rage, intent on murdering them. Characters with a barcode mask or bloody mask will be the next likely to be chased down intently by the Flamines.
Characters with a :( mask will be killed if they get in the Flamines’ way, though they will not go out of their way to chase them down.
Characters with a vine mask or feather mask will be treated with wariness, though they may still be attacked if they get in a Flamines’ way.
Characters with a grey mask will not be killed unless they are first the aggressor, as will characters with a bloody fingerprint mask.
Naturally there will be exceptions to every rule, but the masks will change how the Flamines’ generally act towards characters!
PHASE IV [ ❓❓❓ ] But something’s not quite right.
Regardless of the battles against the Flamines, it seems Cerealia’s just been under too much pressure lately. Something had to give --
And it’s the code building up the characters that really suffers.
Their code has been hanging on by a thread without CERES to maintain it, and now… it’s finally giving out. The glitches that afflicted characters before will be even more prominent now; they might glitch from place to place, or have their powers go totally awry in odd ways. There may be a lack of powers suddenly, or a sudden difficulty staying on the ground as gravity stops working on the character.
They might suddenly be unable to breathe, or go cold, or very nearly die --
But it can be controlled, too, with effort. Characters can learn to control the glitches, gaining an ability to almost teleport, or ways to tweak their powers in exciting new ways.
With a lot of effort, they could even possibly reverse a death -- but only their own, and only once.
BONUS [ ❓❓❓ ] There are also… birds?
Flamingos, to be exact. Who knows where they came from, but either way, there are plastic flamingos chilling all over the place. They’re just normal plastic; they don’t move, they can very easily be destroyed --
But if you touch one with your bare hands… it’ll have an interesting effect.
Characters will suddenly find that they have the abilities or the last person they touched -- but without any of the practice or ability to control it, of course.
Still, it might help with that pesky Flamines problem, right?

[Rock Lee recognizes this place. He's been here long ago... the place believed to be the Nexus Code itself. Now home to even more people from his world!
He steps through the area with caution, and without the excitement that he used to. He's come to accept that waking everyone up will be no easy task; but he'll check the area anyway, just to see if there's anything that he can do, for anyone in the area.]
Is - is anybody here?!
[Phase III]
[Lee finds a familiar mask at hand; one which bears bloody fingerprints.
...And he'll soon find some Flamines homing in on his location. Lee attempts to retreat, but he may end up fighting if cornered. Except that his physical attacks don't seem to do much against them...]
[Phase IV]
Waaaaaauuuuugghhhh!!
[That's the sound of a glitching young bowlcut, as it seems that gravity is playing around with him in the middle of the city. He may end up floating in the air for a while, or being dropped back down (in which case you should be careful, should he land on you!), or he may end up being teleported to any random place around the city!
Maybe he'll get the hang of whatever's going on. Eventually.]
[Bonus]
[Rock Lee is very confused and concerned by these lifeless flamingos that have suddenly appeared. He cautiously assumes a fighting stance as he surveys them.]
...Are these enemies as well?
[He doesn't have much in the ways of powers to give himself, but should someone else touch him before he makes contact with the flamingos....]
[Wildcard]
[Feel free to throw something else at me using any of the prompts! He'll also be doing what he can to help coordinate people who volunteer over the Cerevice!]
iv!
Woah—!
[Get back here?! Holy moly, Kashuu's zipping off right after him, clearly concerned.]
What're you doing up there!
no subject
Kashuu-kun?! I... I am wondering that very question myself!!
[He flails around, in vain hopes of coming closer to the ground.]

D'you think you could reach if I jump?! I'll try to grab you and bring you back!

While he might have heard Rock Lee's voice, he just couldn't help but stop and stare at the body right before him]
no subject
...It's easy to notice the similarity between Takeru and the frozen body before him.]
Ah...
no subject
R-Rock Lee, is that you? I'm sorry, I didn't know you were here. I hope that I wasn't ignoring you.
no subject
Yes, Takeru-kun! It is truly me. Do not worry. I am the one who... I did not mean to interrupt you!!

[well, lee. if you ever wanted to use your strength of heart to bear a keyblade, this is the perfect time to do so.]
They don't seem like they're alive...
no subject
Not alive? That... that's so sad, Roxas-kun!!
no subject
[they look like lawn ornaments.]

bonus
They're obviously made of plastic. Are you seriously going to pick a fight with these?
no subject
I thought that you were more open-minded by that! We cannot underestimate anyone, no matter what material that they are composed of! But, I will only fight them if they show hostility!

III
[As Rock fights, he'll be interrupted by a voice from overhead. Viridi sits cross-legged in mid-air and tsks in a definitely judgmental manner.]
What happened to all of that bluster? What happened to the confidence and moxie?! Don't make me have to compliment your eyebrows again.
no subject
Ah... There is no need for that! My heart has already been stirred and inspired by those past kind words of admiration! I... I just need to push myself further!
[Rock Lee starts opening some of his Gates, increasing his speed and his power as his body is pushed past its limits. And he starts being able to keep up with them more easily, and his blows start to relatively feel more effective, at the very least.]
no subject
[And for once, Viridi will actually deign to help out as a flash of golden light shines before a small bottle materializes in Rock's pocket.]
That's the nectar of the gods.
Save it for when you're almost dead. It's not actually safety-tested on humans, but what's the worst that could happen? You might get cancer in the state of California, I guess.

phase iii
Except...the cavalry has a barcode mask that he's yet to get fixed. And only has extra wind abilities at his disposal.
But...he's there! So he's going to try! ]
Magarudyne!
[ So that sure is a giant gust of wind that hits the Flamine's right on target. Excellent shot!
Buuuuut all it does is knock their masks of... ]
no subject
Well done! I... I always knew that you would come to my side!
[Then he turns his attention back to the Flamine! ...Or he tries to, because one look at the unmasked creature freaks him out, and he staggers backwards.]
Th-that... Could that be the true form?!
no subject
But that? That wasn't at all what he intended on happening. ]
Shit! That's--
[ NOT...GOOD? ]
--what the hell is that!?
(no subject)
Bonus
[ Disconcertingly, her voice comes from directly behind him despite the lack of any footsteps leading up to it. When he turns, he'll find her standing there quite placidly with her feather mask held in her hands, as if teleporting in right next to people were an every day sort of occurrence. ]
At least - I haven't seen them attack anyone yet. Not that that means anything.
[ But, you know, it's awfully hard to be evil when you can't move at all, so. ]
no subject
That mask of yours is very pretty! [He gives a thumbs up; his only has bloody fingerprints on it. But then he turns his attention back to the flamingoes.] So they have been dormant all this time? Maybe they are benign!
no subject
[ Pleasantly surprised by the compliment, she casts a glance at her own mask, then his - which makes her pause, brows raising. ]
Yours is... interesting.
[ And it's probably better not to dwell on it, because that's 'interesting' in a concerning sort of way. ]
Maybe. But I'm not sure I'd bet on it. They could have some purpose we aren't aware of yet.
[ Really, though, that's somewhat secondary in her thoughts. What's at the forefront is-- ]
It's good to see that you're still alive, by the way.
