Queen of the Mountain

It's morning when the lights go out completely. Not a single one remains on except the glow of the device and whatever flashlights anyone bothered to stock up on. However, a single hologram in the Shopping District broadcasts along a billboard for a Very Important Announcement. After that, you hear a song so tender and beautiful that it must have been composed by angels at the dawn of time.

"Baby, you light up my world like nobody else. The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed… "

When you go outside to investigate, a friendly clown will be inside a stolen(?) ice cream truck, looking to get all your attention before he talks through the speaker on the truck.
"Greetings, Cerealians! It's nice of you to join us at last. Are you worried about the power coming back? Oh, I'm sure CERES is working on it now. Rest assured that they have their finest technicians on the job. You won't be without your precious personal computers and robot-pets much longer.

In the meantime, let's play a game shall we! The rules are rather simple:

♥ You see that necklace on your chest? That's a lantern. You're going to want to hold onto that. If you lose it… well, you don't want to know what will happen to you if you do.
♥ Now, for the fun part! Collect the necklaces any way you wish, though we prefer the naughty way. Kill a friend. Kill a foe. Killkillkillkill until the streets are paved with blood.
♥ Whoever collects the most of those lanterns, gets a special surprise! They get to go back home, back to their friends and loved ones and away from CERES' endless lies and trickery. Don't you know it's all a lie? Your worlds weren't destroyed. This is a penal colony, and you've been suckered into the biggest prank of your life. But I'm here to help, of course. Just bring me a garbage bag full of the lanterns, and I'll show you, the lucky winner, the way out."

PHASE I
[ xx:xx ] You're going about your business, wading through the dark, finding supplies. But you're not alone. After the broadcast happens, everything is in full swing. Some masked participants decide to start breaking into shops, classes, apartments, you name it. There's no escaping them. They're on the hunt, they're after you 'cause they're hungry like the woooolf. You can choose to engage them, fight your way out, jump into the game, or head to the sanctuary located in CERES academy. The choice is yours. Be sure to make the right one.
PHASE II
[ xx:xx ] Spiders, spiders everywhere. For those who decided to surrender their lanterns, the first twelve hours of the game are a breeze. Then, come the spiders, hungry critters that will attack and try to catch you in their many webs strewn through the colony. Be sure not to get stuck in one while they chase you.
PHASE III
[ xx:xx ] Feeling weak? Not quite keeping up with the clown-faced gentlemen? Or maybe even your former friends and lovers? Well, there's a solution for that! You'll find another masked man happily pedaling some Pulse for you to take. The temptation is there with the promise of extra strength and a boost of power and speed. He won't hint at any side-effects, but oh, how you'll feel them when they hit. And those trying to dodge that fate, don't put your drink down anywhere or take your eyes off your food. Someone just might slip a little extra to get this game really going.

PHASE IV
[ xx:xx ] It's the last day of the game. You're tired. You're weary. You may have stabbed a roommate or ten. But the lights are gradually returning while the CEO appears as if from nowhere with a public apology on all the billboards. You're welcome to spam your disgust and contempt in his inbox. His explanation for not being around? Quite simple! He was off on an expedition this whole time and wasn't aware of the situation because he gets no reception out in the jungle. See, he was doing it all for the good of the colony and trying to look for more habitable terrain. Isn't that kind of him?

Any further complaints will be forward to his underlings, Elias and Lucius.

BONUS
[ why:o'clock ] You know what's fun? Jumping castles! Someone happened to surreptitiously leave one in CERES' large garden. Do you want to go in and see what's inside? For a limited time only, you can escape the madness and murder to jump to your heart's content. There also might be another clown-faced murderer watching you as you jump. And jump again. He'll just be in the corner. Breathing. Watching.

Welcome to CEREALIA's fourth official event. For your convenience, we have compiled an OOC post explaining the event in greater detail. Feel free to ask questions there if you have anymore lingering concerns or inquiries.

unluckless: (though i respect that lot)

[Komaeda tried to roll with it at first, hoping there'd be hope in it. But he's had the benefit of a great deal of retrospective on in. And dying. And that's rather changed his opinion on things entirely.]

That's too bad. Hinata-kun and I were worried something like this might happen, so we have quite a few supplies and provisions stocked up. So if you do need somewhere safe, I'm sure you'd be welcome to come.

Well, so long as you definitely don't plan on murdering anyone. That's the first rule! And the most important rule!
prosecutory: (♘ and I discovered that)

[personal profile] prosecutory 2014-11-07 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
I most certainly do not. [His jaw is set. He means it.] But that is a laudable strategy. What made you believe something like this would happen in time?
unluckless: (0938)

[personal profile] unluckless 2014-11-10 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... call it a lot of past experience. When we arrived here, coming from where we'd been, we couldn't be sure it wasn't a trick being played by the people in charge of that place. Or maybe it's habit. In that place, if you didn't prepare when it was quiet, you could be caught unawares when something terrible happened.

[And it did happen. Often.] But I'm glad to hear you don't plan on playing this game. No matter what they're promising about leaving, I'm sure it's not true.
prosecutory: (♖ you shoot me down; but I won't fall)

[personal profile] prosecutory 2014-11-13 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Good point. Edgeworth never thought of that in his first worldhopping adventure, and he certainly didn't think of it now. He considered the idea of a trick, yes, but put more priority in investigating the place and trying to live out his life rather than brace himself for a disaster. Maybe it's because he never experienced such a thing back in Death City. Sure, they had several city invasions and got washed away into the desert, but it wasn't like they needed to survive on only a few supplies.]

I agree, although we have no evidence to prove either case. [If it was true, or not.] But in any case, this wouldn't justify taking even a single life.
unluckless: (0948)

[personal profile] unluckless 2014-11-14 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Komaeda nods in approval. That is his particular opinion as well, no justification for killing in this. He's held different ideas in the past, of course. But after everything he's been through, he's come to think he may have been mistaken then.
And this time, the justification is even less than it had been.]

Definitely not. And the fact that there's a group so ready to participate in it... they really do seem organized, don't they? [They all dressed alike. It's creepy Komaeda doesn't like it.]
prosecutory: (♙ all the mistakes one life contained)

[personal profile] prosecutory 2014-11-14 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not always. Some of them attack recklessly, or move on their own. [And he knows this because he has been running into them.] I wonder who they might be... [Locals? But what would they have to gain if they won, if this was already their home? Were these other people newcomers like themselves?]
unluckless: (after killing jason off)

[personal profile] unluckless 2014-11-16 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Is that so? That's unpredictable then.

[More dangerous. Komaeda frowns, entirely unimpressed by the clown posses.] That is the question. If they're looking for the "prize" of getting home... well, are they people who've been here before us?

[Or even their contemporaries? Though Komaeda has to wonder about that, with how ready these clown people were to play this game, like they knew it was coming.]
prosecutory: (♘ people couldn't believe)

[personal profile] prosecutory 2014-11-20 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
We have no way of knowing that, unless we manage to apprehend one of them and unmask them.

[Unfortunately, Edgeworth had been more focused on staying alive that this had not been a priority. In any case, it was probably best not to do that sort of thing on his own.]
unluckless: (shpwreck free)

[personal profile] unluckless 2014-11-28 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be one strategy. Though I don't think someone with as few fighting skills as me would be up to that task.

[Komaeda isn't sure there really is a police force at the moment. Everything went dark and hell broke loose. IT's strange, and not what one would expect of so advanced a place, right?

Maybe?]

To priority is probably staying safe anyway. The last thing I want to do is add to the trouble other people have to deal with.
prosecutory: it's my life; bon jovi (♗ this ain't a song)

[personal profile] prosecutory 2014-11-30 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a point. Apprehending one and then detaining them would be difficult under these conditions.

[There IS a police force. Edgeworth knows because he is currently their secretary. But the police folk might be too busy with their own thing.

Paranoid thought: WHAT IF SOME OF THEM ARE THE CLOWNS.]
unluckless: (my story's infinite)

[personal profile] unluckless 2014-12-01 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Very. Especially since their intentions are definitely much more extreme than ours would be.

[If one side is willing to kill, and the other just to capture, it's an uneven playing field to say the least, isn't it? Hmm.]

I suppose it is disappointing. You'd think the people in charge would be more involved in stopping this from happening. [Seriously where are the police anyway? Or yeah, they're also clowns and that's not a great thought.]
prosecutory: (♘ and that was when)

[personal profile] prosecutory 2014-12-05 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Desperate times, desperate measures. Komaeda was right in stating that they could be more desperate than the sane, non-masked, lantern'd ones.]

Indeed. I have yet to run into the police.
unluckless: (55)

[personal profile] unluckless 2014-12-05 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So as much as the clown-masked people seemed prepared for this, the police definitely didn't. [A pause before he adds with a laugh even if it is not amusing at all when he really thinks about it.] Unless their preparation involved taking cover until it's over.

[Actually that's his new working theory.]
prosecutory: (♘ I can't explain; I know)

[personal profile] prosecutory 2014-12-06 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That...might actually, unfortunately, be true.

[He sighs and raises a hand to his forehead. No one bothered to make perimeters or mark off safe places or send out patrols. It's mostly the guests versus the crazy clowns and the guests willing to kill for that one shot at going home.]
