Queen of the Mountain
It's morning when the lights go out completely. Not a single one remains on except the glow of the device and whatever flashlights anyone bothered to stock up on. However, a single hologram in the Shopping District broadcasts along a billboard for a Very Important Announcement. After that, you hear a song so tender and beautiful that it must have been composed by angels at the dawn of time.
"Baby, you light up my world like nobody else. The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed… "
When you go outside to investigate, a friendly clown will be inside a stolen(?) ice cream truck, looking to get all your attention before he talks through the speaker on the truck.
"Greetings, Cerealians! It's nice of you to join us at last. Are you worried about the power coming back? Oh, I'm sure CERES is working on it now. Rest assured that they have their finest technicians on the job. You won't be without your precious personal computers and robot-pets much longer.
In the meantime, let's play a game shall we! The rules are rather simple:
♥ You see that necklace on your chest? That's a lantern. You're going to want to hold onto that. If you lose it… well, you don't want to know what will happen to you if you do.
♥ Now, for the fun part! Collect the necklaces any way you wish, though we prefer the naughty way. Kill a friend. Kill a foe. Killkillkillkill until the streets are paved with blood.
♥ Whoever collects the most of those lanterns, gets a special surprise! They get to go back home, back to their friends and loved ones and away from CERES' endless lies and trickery. Don't you know it's all a lie? Your worlds weren't destroyed. This is a penal colony, and you've been suckered into the biggest prank of your life. But I'm here to help, of course. Just bring me a garbage bag full of the lanterns, and I'll show you, the lucky winner, the way out."

PHASE I [ xx xx ]
You're going about your business, wading through the dark, finding supplies. But you're not alone. After the broadcast happens, everything is in full swing. Some masked participants decide to start breaking into shops, classes, apartments, you name it. There's no escaping them. They're on the hunt, they're after you 'cause they're hungry like the woooolf. You can choose to engage them, fight your way out, jump into the game, or head to the sanctuary located in CERES academy. The choice is yours. Be sure to make the right one.
PHASE II [ xxxx ]
Spiders, spiders everywhere. For those who decided to surrender their lanterns, the first twelve hours of the game are a breeze. Then, come the spiders, hungry critters that will attack and try to catch you in their many webs strewn through the colony. Be sure not to get stuck in one while they chase you.
PHASE III [ xxxx ]
Feeling weak? Not quite keeping up with the clown-faced gentlemen? Or maybe even your former friends and lovers? Well, there's a solution for that! You'll find another masked man happily pedaling some Pulse for you to take. The temptation is there with the promise of extra strength and a boost of power and speed. He won't hint at any side-effects, but oh, how you'll feel them when they hit. And those trying to dodge that fate, don't put your drink down anywhere or take your eyes off your food. Someone just might slip a little extra to get this game really going.
PHASE IV [ xxxx ]
It's the last day of the game. You're tired. You're weary. You may have stabbed a roommate or ten. But the lights are gradually returning while the CEO appears as if from nowhere with a public apology on all the billboards. You're welcome to spam your disgust and contempt in his inbox. His explanation for not being around? Quite simple! He was off on an expedition this whole time and wasn't aware of the situation because he gets no reception out in the jungle. See, he was doing it all for the good of the colony and trying to look for more habitable terrain. Isn't that kind of him?
Any further complaints will be forward to his underlings, Elias and Lucius.
BONUS [ whyo'clock ]
You know what's fun? Jumping castles! Someone happened to surreptitiously leave one in CERES' large garden. Do you want to go in and see what's inside? For a limited time only, you can escape the madness and murder to jump to your heart's content. There also might be another clown-faced murderer watching you as you jump. And jump again. He'll just be in the corner. Breathing. Watching.

[ This whole thing has her on edge. Her nerves are all twisted and she feels like any second she will gag on whatever she ate before this (can she even remember?). It's hard to focus on the reality of the situation when the actuality of death hangs heavy in the air. This is no different than that camp, the pit of her stomach tells her, it's no different than being murdered by possessed spirits.
To keep herself occupied before she ruins the nerves in her hands from furling and unfurling them too much, she keeps a close distance to the other two and searches for anything that might keep them safe. ]
Do you guys— do you guys think we should look for a place to hide?
[ Mary sounds frightened, but she's picking through the alley way they're currently in for anything that could be considered a weapon. She doesn't want to have to use it, but like hell she isn't going to attempt to defend herself either. The only source of light is the lantern around her neck as she slowly steps around heaps of discarded trash and uses it to navigate her way. ]
phase iii
[ It only took a glass of cola; the effects hit her immediately, but she isn't aware of why she's suddenly much stronger than usual. She definitely doesn't feel any different except for the fact that she feels like she can scale a building if she honestly wants to try.
What she doesn't notice is the growing anger and if she does, she doesn't seem to have a problem with it. The streets are dark and she listens to the silence, but it only reminds her more and more of that place — that place that took her life and didn't do anything to bring it back. Now, she's stuck here, fighting for her life once again.
She refuses to die. Even if she has to kill others — she refuses to die. Mary feels the anger becoming white hot rage flowing through her veins and in one fell swoop, she brings up her foot to smash one of the store windows. It shatters like flower petals underneath her strength. ]
I won't— [ The glass crunches underneath her feet as she steps through the window and into the store. It looks to carry nothing but age old (though still way after her time) technology. The uselessness of it all makes her even angrier as she grabs the corners of laptops and computers and smashes them down onto the ground. None of that seems to satisfy her though. ] I won't let it happen again!
[ Her voice is hoarse as always, but there's a sense of more than frustration in her tone. It's hate. Even her own words don't make sense to her. She doesn't care about that though as she lets out a furious cry and continues to smash the electronics as much as she can before someone is able to stop her. ]

[ After hours of resting, her entire body feels exhausted. Her hand goes to her face just to make sure that all of this is real and isn't some awful dream she's living through. There are small cuts on her hand that she doesn't recognize at first. Her mind is in a haze, piecing together the events of what's been going on the past few... days? Hours? She doesn't know anymore. ]
Where...?
[ Her throat feels dry and her entire body aches. It's all so confusing to her that she wants to cry, but she doesn't even have the energy for that. Energy—? Where did that burst of energy come from? And why did she...? It's too much to think about right now as she furrows her eyebrows and places her hand over her eyes.
Mary just feels so weak that she wants to go back to sleep and sink into the oblivion of darkness, never to step out into the horrific world of the reminders she's always going to face here in Cerealia. She wants to wake up and see the smiling photo of Kimber next to her bed, she wants to hear Pizzazz's voice telling her to haul ass over to the studio, and she wants to feel like fighting is pointless now. That the only thing that matters, the only thing that's always mattered, is playing music with people she cares about.
The reality is that's all gone. She makes a sound that's a cross between a huff and a laugh. She knows there's someone there watching over her, but she doesn't know wether they're safe or not. ]

Which is why he passes his club off to Naoi, and Jason keeps a hold on his gun. He'd give something to Mary if he had a third option, but alas. ]

[ Waking up to darkness... really isn't such a new thing for Yang. When you had a little sister who, on occasion, woke you up in the middle of the night, or you had to take the night watch, this isn't anything special.
But the necklace is new.
And so is the clown.
Yang's not sure what to think of this insistence that these lanterns are the key to getting them home, but more importantly, actively encouraging a bloodbath among friends? Not cool.
Which isn't to say she's outright resisting violence. Because if you see her, you'll also see her hair glowing a bright gold as she slams one masked assailant to the ground, blocks another one, and puts her back against a shop window to do a quick count. ]
Six... well, gee, now it's a party.
[ Join 'em, join her, avoid detection, the world's your oyster. But if you're also in need of help, just call out-- she'll come to you. And if you want her lantern, you might have to work for it. ]

[ So, okay. It's all over. A bunch of people just committed murder for lightbulb on a chain, half of them seemingly weren't in their right minds, and Yang has fought more than she's slept. So when the CEO offers the world's weakest apology, she takes a threatening step forward, her eyes flickering from purple to red. ]
Hold me back.
[ Or hold me up, because she will be sagging in under ten seconds. ]

Though he'd rather hunker down somewhere for a while instead of constantly running into new opponents to fight, Edgeworth sighs, sprints toward the farthest masked stranger with one hand outstretched. Once his hand comes in contact with the person's back, electric blue sparks fan out from his fingers, and with a piercing scream, said person crumples to the ground as Edgeworth jumps back to avoid getting squashed.
That draws attention from Yang, all right. It draws all the attention toward Edgeworth. A second assailant lunges for him, but Edgeworth grabs and tosses the person neatly over his hip (this has been done to him several times before; now it's his turn to do it).]

[Just three months of dealing with the things that happen here have been more than enough to make Kaoru immediately distrusting of this "offer". Returning home? There's no chance it would be that easy, and there's no way that Kaoru is going to trust anyone saying that escape is as simple as one-two-three (or murder, in this case).
So rather than turning a blade on anyone else, Kaoru can be found with one hand curled around the lantern necklace, sticking to the sides of buildings and seeming to be on guard. NO SPIDERS ARE HEADING THIS WAY AT LEAST so maybe anyone with lanterns should come and hang out - safety in numbers and all. Those who approach without any obvious intent to start a fight will be met with a wary look, but not turned away.]

Like, so obviously bullshit that he can't believe anyone would even fall for it (except he can, because he knows how far people can go when they're desperate). But between how completely shady the messenger is, and how it'd be far too easy, and how he doubts they'd be rewarded for that, he's stalking the streets for one reason, and one reason only--to defend those who can't protect themselves. It's weird, how much altruistic defending he's been doing lately, but when he considers that his task is rapidly becoming "Go against whatever bullshit CERES sends at them next", it makes perfect sense.
He narrows his eyes, but the voice is familiar, and he doesn't even bother to lower his hand to the hilt of his sword.]

Whether it's a lie or not, Edgeworth isn't about to turn to the dark side. Despite missing his own home and his own world and the normalcy of it all, he believed that the end did not justify the means, not one bit. Besides, what if that was also a lie? He wasn't about to believe a clown right away especially if he didn't even believe the CEO during his first few days here.
Knowing that some people would hunt him down for his lantern (an item that would need to be examined more closely later on; how on CERES was it slipped onto him?), he began cramming whatever supplies he could fit into a backpack before leaving his apartment in a hurry. Obviously, those who wanted to go home so badly would think to search in the apartments first, would they?
At first, he's more interested in evading people who look suspicious - those masked marauders. Edgeworth preferred to expend his energy by ducking through alleys with only his lantern to guide him, and shops that look safe, searching for a place to hide while at the same time observing his surroundings and seeing if he could pick up more supplies (and somehow leave money behind to pay for them). Very little light, no electricity, broken glass and wrecked doors. You might run into him then...
PHASE I-B
...or run into him trying to fight his way through these creepy masked strangers. At first, he only uses his hands and feet, not wanting to end up killing even if it was only for self-defense. One weirdo will get a right cross to the mask while trying to reach for the prize around the prosecutor's neck, another will lose his knife to a well-placed kick before Edgeworth sprints off without looking back. This time, he wasn't about to let someone sneak up on him and club him on the head. Thank you, months of being thrown all over the practice mat back in Shibusen.
Things get serious quickly; more and more of the murderous people are on his tail, drawn by his lantern (he could pocket it but it doubled as a faint light source). They're now attacking in pairs, even groups, all of them wanting the lantern.
A faint, ironic grin tugs at his lips. This was just like Episode 51 of the Steel Samurai - "The Boy with the Griffin Tattoo". But this was not how he wanted to relive it at all.
As things get serious, you'll find Edgeworth, sword drawn, trying not to actually kill anyone - just disarming his attackers and defending himself from the onslaught. At one point, a masked stranger tackles him to the ground and he falls forward, the saber clattering from his hand. The stranger grips Edgeworth's wrists behind his back, pinning him down.
Then something happens.
Bright electric blue light crackles and blooms from where the stranger is holding him, and the poor masked fool yells out in pain, letting go as if he had just touched a hot wire and writhing on the ground in agony - even though he is, for all intents and purposes, unmarked. Once Edgeworth is free, he reaches out for his weapon with a hand still crackling with blue energy, breathing hard. Despite that, a small but triumphant and smug smirk can be seen on his face from the glow of his lantern.]
[That...was certainly not in Episode 51.]
[PHASE IV
Edgeworth is exhausted and reading over the notes of their ordeal that he had written down in his organizer during downtime, and the last thing he needs is pitiful excuses from the CEO. First, they arrived as wanted criminals, and now this. He buries his face in his hand with a sound that is a cross between a snarl and a groan, resisting the urge to throw something at the broadcast. His voice is a little hoarse and low; it is hard to tell if that's due to exhaustion or anger or both.]
Is this how we are to be treated from now on, then? [To say that he is infuriated would be an understatement.]

And he can tell that Edgeworth is too, judging by that scene that just played out in front of him.
He's familiar with the supernatural (it'd be impossible for him not to be, not with his heritage as it is), and the tingle of something not quite natural is familiar as well. But he simply knocks out the last of the masked figures in his way with a flick of his wrist, brutal and sharp, and then picks up Edgeworth's sword from the ground, stepping closer with measured steps to hold it out to him.]

[Honestly, this could be completely foolhardy. But, it wouldn't be the first time that they've done something completely foolhardy, now would it? The answer to that is no, all around.
It's why they're outside, he and Komaeda, picking their way through the dark. Hinata has the katana he took from one of the assassin droids at his waist, had given Komaeda his pistol earlier, and underneath his clothes are hidden various shivs, other weapons he might need. The glowing necklace around his neck feels like a beacon, even if he's stuffed it down the front of his shirt.
And he can swear he can hear them. Skittering somewhere, here and there, in the dark. People. Rats. How boring. His hand flexes where it's placed on the hilt of the katana, gripping it until he's white-knuckled. He looks over one shoulder, aware, hyperaware of Komaeda.]
This way— [It's not a second after he's said it that he hears them, surging out of the woodwork and he sees necklaces glowing in the dark. And there's laughter and the flash of masks and he swears as he steps back, closer to Komaeda.] —shit.

[After the somewhat extraordinarily dangermongering events of above, Hinata returned the hell back to his apartment. It's where this broadcast is coming from, in fact, and it seems that in the background and around him there are various candles lit.
...it could either be incredibly romantic or incredibly creepy, depending on who you are.
So, it's probably creepy to you. Especially with those sharp red eyes of his, and that just-as-sharp frown.] Oi. I guess, by now, everyone's seen them, right? Those clown-masked people. You might've already been fighting them, since they're everywhere.

Who knows why you turned away when you did but, once you turn to retrieve your food or your drink, you might find Hinata suddenly there, holding the sharp, curved edge of a hunter's knife against a masked man's throat, his face impassive but somehow still managing to exude a feeling of powerful anger. He'll give you a quick look before pushing the knife harder, just enough to score a bleeding line.]

[Ruby had already begun looking around for anyone that needed help as soon as the announcement had been made. The idea that people were falling for the obvious trick was... upsetting to her and understandable all at the same time. Of course, when she got surrounded in the streets, she just sighed, one hand going to where Crescent Rose was holstered.]
You guys do realize, I only have one necklace, right?
[There was no response but a few chuckled as she pulled her mechanical weapon from its holster, obviously thinking they were safe from it. Half a beat later, 8 of the assailants lunged, various weapons converging on where she had been standing only to connect with a handful of drifting rose petals. One of the masked men looked up and called to his friends to do the same, where Ruby hung in the air for a moment, weapon unfolding before a muzzle flare and gunshot rang out behind her, sending her rocketing down to the ground with intense force. She was extra careful to not use the blade of the scythe on any of the assailants, but she was not merciful otherwise. She used the momentum of the scythe to fling herself around only to then plant her feet and transfer that momentum to the weapon again. It was as if she were dancing as she dispatched the crowd with little effort.]
Man... these guys really have no idea what a Huntress is capable of...

[It had been a long couple days, and Ruby was exhausted. She didn't even care about the non-apology they had gotten. She was more concerned about the people she had been able to help, and the people she didn't get to. For now, she was just going to go back to her apartment and leap into her suspended bunk bed and do her best to forget everything. However, she doesn't quite make it back , having taken to using Crescent Rose as a walking stick. Instead, she winds up slumping against a nearby building, yawning, and dozing off.]
BONUS
[It had only taken a quick nap for Ruby to get another burst of energy, and she caught a second wind when she saw the bounce castle. She hadn't been in one of those since one of the Vytal Festivals when she was just a little kid. With nearly reckless abandon, she pulled off her boots, unfolding her scythe and burying the blade deep into the ground nearby to prevent theft, and dove head first into the castle, bouncing and giggling as the stress of the "game" seemed to melt away.]

his plan had been to scope out things and take down anyone who may have been a threat—in this case, it was those who organized this stupid game. he may not have any qualms in drawing his sword and cutting people down, but he's not interested in the stupid mind games, either. he kills people who need it, he kills people in times of political tension and war... he's not as reckless as he was when he was younger, and souji doesn't have much interest in hurting or killing fellow residents for a game. especially not one with a bullshit prize. sure, he doesn't believe that their worlds were really destroyed either, but he isn't going to fall for the notion that needless bloodletting will net him a one way trip back to kyoto, either.
souji though he'd been careful, too. he took a sealed bottle of water from the apartment when he left, already wary of what could happen. somewhere along the way though? something had to have gone wrong. when it's all over, it's likely he won't even remember when he left the bottle unattended (a rare enough flub for him), but that time period is just enough for someone to slip pulse into it. and that... well, that's when souji loses it.
the burst of energy manifests in the way he can control the least. it brings his rasetsu side to the forefront. gone is his normal appearance—instead, it's replaced by white hair and glowing red eyes that barely maintain any semblance of his humanity. it's not enough that he's in that form, but he resembles a rasetsu who has gone completely mad, seeking little more than to spill blood.]
Heh... heheh... HAHAHAHA! [his laughter is unhinged as he seeks a target. he's retained enough of his mind to be able to speak and recognize those he meets... but that's about as far as it goes. loyalties and alliances lose their meaning when he's in this aggressive state. he's out for blood now, and until it wears off (or he's killed, but only a select few know how to put an end to his life), there's no predicting what souji will do next.]

Drugged. She knows it—there's not a lot of things that can affect her like this, and she's well aware of how this works. Her attempts to hold it off fail, and within a few minutes, she's opening her eyes again.
They're glowing red, even if she's not doing anything with her heat vision, and with a leap into the air, Kara leaves herself behind.
Do you wanna battle a Supergirl, round one. Whenever Kara lands, she'll be leaving behind cracked ground and scorched walls as she just lets loose everything. Is that wall in her way? Not anymore, she just punched a hole through it. Are you trying to get her attention? You shouldn't be—because now she's turning her (literally) heated gaze over, and blasting out anything in her line of sight.
She's also yelling something in the wake of her rage, but to most people it's incomprehensible; unless you know the language of Krypton, and even then it might not make much sense. ]

[Part A: Oh, you have got to be kidding at her. First? Droids bent on their destruction. Now? Clowns. Much like everything else in this world, Integra was skeptical.
Whilst puffing on a lit cigar, Integra's first plan was to - of course - salvage the police department of whatever supplies she could make use of: maps of the city, weapons and ammunition, medical supplies... She stuffed them into a satchel around her shoulders hastily. So long as she still possessed this 'lantern', she was a target. She bore no intention to collect them, of course; though saw at as her duty to protect the lives of those less fortunate caught up in this mess.
Part B: Excellent plan, Sir. Let's play heroine! Let's sprint down the streets armed to the teeth in an an attempt to restore order! While the clowns initially gave her little trouble, at first, she was slowly growing weary-- and it showed.
Anyone who knew Integra could tell from the way she swung her blade. When they began to double before her eyes, her once controlled and precise slashes had become reckless-- as if she hardly paid attention to the direction she pointed her sword. She was past the point of having overexerted herself, no. She was running off of the last of her adrenaline by this point. By god, someone please sit her down!]
{Phase IV}
[Or, perhaps you will run into a woman with bloodshot eyes and frazzled hair quite visibly glowering at the CEO. This sort of incident - to her - was nothing more than inexcusable. From the streets, she shouts:]
Well come and show yourself then, you bloody coward!
[It was hard to decipher if Integra's reaction come from her general lack of sleep, or her steadily broiling rage. It's been ages since she wished to hunt down someone so desperately.]

[Did you know that Terry McGinnis really hates clowns? He seriously hates clowns. Coming from a world where there are clown gangs, modeled after a dead psychotic clown, this is absolutely nothing new. It's just a slag to see them again.
But he isn't going to go running. Even in street clothes he can still fight and like hell he'll give up his lantern if these dregs want it so bad.
So he fights, slamming back as many as he can with kicks and punches using a mix of dirty fighting and actual trained martial arts. If you need any help or want to join in on the brawl, he's your guy.]
Phase III (as Batman)
[It was a sloppy mistake. That's all there is to say about it. He grabbed onto someone holding a vial, trying to stop them from pedaling it, and the dreg uncapped it and splashed some on his face. Only a few drops got into his mouth through that error, but it's enough that he's beginning to feel side-effects.
Either he's
1) Crouching down by the corner of a building, trying to spit out what got in his mouth with no luck. It hasn't begun yet, but it will soon. He's been shot with these "enhancer" drugs against his will before and he knows they're all fast acting. He just wants to desperately hope he can avoid that fate.
2) Already in full swing of the effects. He's fighting harder than ever before, putting more strength into each blow and dangerously injuring the clowns instead of just dispatching them from being threats. He's enjoying it even, the adrenaline rush of battle getting to him fast. He wants to keep fighting, no matter who it might be.
Which is why if he locks eyes with you, you may want to consider running.]
Phase I (as Terry) -- Safety Zone
[No longer on Pulse and too tired to do anything else, Terry retreats later in the week to the Academy for safety. He slumps down in the waiting area, tired and slagged from being on the Pulse.]
Ugh...I think I might hurl.
[He really wants to just go into a coma right about now.]

And look, he gets being pissed at creepy evil clowns - heck, from what Terry's told him, the guy has even more reason to hate Joker and his cronies than he does. There's a couple of clowns strung up around the streets as a result of his own irritation. But wearing that cowl means bearing the responsibilities that come with it - it's been drilled into his head enough times how dangerous it would be if Batman and Robin abused what power they had. So when a goon lands at his feet so wounded that Dick actually can't tell for a second whether the guy's still alive until he checks his breathing, he scowls up at Terry.]
Hey, FB! Ease up a little, will you? I know clowns are the worst, but you're going to actually kill them at this rate.
