![]() It's been a whole month without any new arrivals. Who knows why? If you ask CERES, they won't bother with any in-depth explanations. They will simply claim that none of the code out there has been responding to their recovery methods, so they had to rework a lot of their technology. However, after several weeks of grueling work, they have finally experienced success! A fresh new batch of faces is coming in, and to celebrate their arrival and the real upcoming holidays, CEO Julius Vincere has arranged for a Christmas-themed carnival for all to enjoy. Those who arrive will wake up in Cerealia and be given a long, boring explanation and powerpoint as per usual before being ushered onto a bus (there is no escape. The robots will force you onto the bus one way or another). You will be unwillingly carted to the theme park where you will be immediately assaulted by a giant array of lights followed by several rides that you can enjoy. After you disembark from the bus, one of the snowman robots will be waiting to give you tickets to the rides and show you around as part of the Grand Opening. The amusement park will remain open for the rest of the month of December so anyone can visit as they please. The first couple tickets will also be on the house for new arrivals, but the rest will have to be bought with credits, so choose wisely! (Or try and sneak into the rides -- then face the wrath of the snowman robots and their snowman firearms :D)

But here there's apparently no need for anyone to be worrying about him anymore, and no one he really cares about to worry, so trying to cover it up after he's covered a stranger in blood and phlegm might not be too important. Especially since said stranger, while tense, happily doesn't seem like the type who will fuss over him.]
Seems like there's a lot to learn about this place. It's not exactly anything like home. [He lets out a small laugh, before tilting his head slightly, studying the stranger's expression. As much as he'd like the subject to leave anything disease-related as soon as possible, he's also never been good at letting go of things once they've sparked his interest.] You recognized it, didn't you? This kind of disease...?
no subject
[which is a flat out truth. even after being here for a few months, there's stuff souji encounters every day that is just plain weird or beyond his understanding. even the things he thought he was once able to grasp from his time in another situation similar to theirs now seemed to pale in comparison to some of the things he's seen here.
but as the subject shifts back to that damn disease, souji finds himself sucking in a breath before letting out a slightly bitter laugh.] When you come from a place where there's no cure for those types of illnesses, it's pretty difficult to miss, don't you think?
[for now, he evades admitting that he's fallen victim to it, that at one point, he couldn't stand on his own two feet or wield his sword to fight for the shinsengumi's cause. but it's not as if he doesn't know that once he says his name, there's the possibility of it all being revealed anyway. he's met enough people from japan's future to know his own fate, after all, and what little use there is in hiding it when they already know the facts.]

He nods, and when he replies his voice is a little bit softer and steadier - understanding, but without any outright sympathy which could be taken for pity. Somehow, he has a feeling that such a thing wouldn't be well received.]
It's true. Sometimes it seems like everyone has ended up affected by it somehow - although some people are less lucky than others. [And he doesn't exactly mean his own situation, though it might seem that way. Not that he doesn't hate the thought of the creeping sickness stealing his strength, making him useless, but because he refuses to think of himself as unlucky, as a victim of circumstance. What little control he has over the situation, he treasures.] I suppose I should count myself lucky to be here instead, but I don't really feel that way.

[he appreciates that there isn't an edge of pity, and souji thinks maybe this other man is like that because he doesn't want the pity either. he gets it, because that's exactly how he is, too.
and he understands not feeling lucky either. the circumstances around them aren't really ideal—despite the guise of luxury, there's a dark underbelly to the whole situation that he's pretty sure doesn't match what they've been told. one thing at a time though, and that's the understanding that they lack a choice. souji knows that if it were him, if he weren't already capable, that he wouldn't want someone to force being healed when he couldn't wield his sword, when he couldn't serve that purpose for kondou and the shinsengumi. there's a serious lack of agency there that he innately understands, even if he doesn't know just how similar their circumstances are at the core.]
There's not a lot of things we get to decide for ourselves, not that way. For now, we have to live as long as they want us to, no matter what our circumstances may have been before.
no subject
The thought is bitter as gall, and he hurriedly pushes it away. If it's right or not, he will refuse to believe it, because the alternative hurts far too much.]
Well, there is nothing here that's worth fighting for, let alone dying for - not for me. So I guess you're right, aren't you? I'm just going to have to keep existing. [A strange little smile, not entirely happy but still somehow genuine.] Unless I find my comrades here, that's all I can do - that's all anyone can do, I guess. But that's a little bit like being imprisoned, and I can't say I like that.

it does earn a bit of a curious gaze, though. there's so much about this conversation that edges in familiarity, that rings true for him—it's a very rare thing, and it leaves him somewhere between commiseration and discomfort. of course, he doesn't let any of that show in his expression despite the curiosity, which stems more from their direct course of conversation than anything else.] I won't argue that it's like being imprisoned. They make it look pretty nice and give us a lot of things, but it doesn't matter much when the ones taking charge say "you're staying here, and that's out decision." Captivity is still captivity, after all.
[it's something souji is thoroughly unamused by, and has been for about a year now—first with haven, and now with cerealia. his loathing of large, modern corporations holding people from different worlds and times hostage is pretty real.] But who knows? You may find those people you're looking for if you can pull yourself together. Things are pretty busy here these days to the point that it's hard to keep track of. [meaning that he's not going to directly offer to help. he will help, but he's not verbally offering because that's just not his style.]

One hand closes briefly into a hard fist, however. It's bad enough to still have the prospect of being slowly imprisoned in one's own body praying on your mind, without having to be kept captive in a more literal sense until that time comes about.] I don't really care for either prettiness or gifts that much, no... especially when they come at the price of my home and my freedom.
[Thankfully, he is good at reading between the lines, and good at understanding why someone would prefer not to outright offer such a thing - especially if you'd prefer to keep your motives to yourself.] Thank you. [It could just be thanks for the support he's been given, even as he seems able to straighten out properly and breathe easier, or perhaps just for the encouraging words.] You're right, of course. There is no point simply accepting the situation - my friends certainly wouldn't. If they have come here, they'll be looking. [He grimaces slightly, a strangely childish gesture, followed by a similarly juvenile little laugh.] Though in Yamazaki-san's case, probably just to feed me health food and lecture me about walking around outside.

That's usually how it happens... we arrive at different times and find one another later, if our comrades are here with us. [it's a pretty simple truth. and usually when unfamiliar faces start to filter in, he goes on pretty high alert for people who either have never been here, or were here before and went missing. it's a force of habit now, one he doesn't even think twice about it when it happens.
which can't be said for hearing the name "yamazaki," which does further spark souji's curiosity. he's not jumping to any conclusions, of course, since there are plenty of people with that name in japan. still... it's hard not to take notice, when there are other similar circumstances at play.] There's someone like that, hm? They must be a hassle if they'd go that far.
no subject
That's good to know. To tell the truth, I haven't been on my own like this since I was nine, you know? It's a little bit scary.
[And that's probably not something he would admit to just any stranger, but somehow it's okay because he's fairly certain by now that he won't be pitied or fussed over. That makes it easier to speak freely.
He smiles a bit ruefully, shaking his head slightly.] And, well, since he's the doctor meant to look after the men now, that's kind of his job. I don't like going against him much, because it might make people worry, but... I'm not the kind of person who can just sit around in bed all day, that's all.
