![]() It's morning when the lights go out completely. Not a single one remains on except the glow of the device and whatever flashlights anyone bothered to stock up on. However, a single hologram in the Shopping District broadcasts along a billboard for a Very Important Announcement. After that, you hear a song so tender and beautiful that it must have been composed by angels at the dawn of time. "Baby, you light up my world like nobody else. The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed… " When you go outside to investigate, a friendly clown will be inside a stolen(?) ice cream truck, looking to get all your attention before he talks through the speaker on the truck.

Welcome to CEREALIA's fourth official event. For your convenience, we have compiled an OOC post explaining the event in greater detail. Feel free to ask questions there if you have anymore lingering concerns or inquiries. |

[ She doesn't sound disheartened at that, but sardonic. If Riot and his croonies were here, there's no doubt they would somehow manage to get a whole bunch of lanterns. They wouldn't even have to kill for them either. Her hand wraps around her lantern. Her thumb traces the symbols. ]
So... should we head to the school after this? It's basically our only lead right now.
no subject
I'll escort you there, certainly, but I'm afraid that I can't stay. I'm looking for my younger sister...
no subject
It hurts too much and she doesn't want this kind stranger to know what that's like either. ]
Do you... want me to help? [ Her voice is soft, yet distant. There's a guarded air about her that weaves through the compassion and understanding. ] I—I'm actually a little sister myself so... I know how worried you must feel.
no subject
You are? I hope that your sibling isn't in trouble... [As far as Kaoru's concerned, CERES and their talk of destroyed worlds is about as trustworthy as CERES itself - not at all.]
But thank you for the kind offer, miss. It means a lot to know that you would help even though I'm the one responsible for taking you away from your group. [This is accompanied with a polite, shallow bow. Kaoru doesn't particularly like holding on to travel partners longer than necessary though, and the guarded air is something that's definitely noticed. Without being able to tell what it's there for, Kaoru just assumes the worst.]
I couldn't possibly continue to keep you from your friends, though.
no subject
My brother's not here so... [ She leaves it at that, because there's nothing else to say. This isn't the time for lamenting about those sorta things when she's got to find her friends and get to safety. When they make it out of this, she'll think about those things. ] Um... my work's not too far from here.
[ She motions for him to follow her to the other side of the building. ] Sometimes I cut through side streets to avoid bigger crowds. If we wanna cut through those to avoid the main streets, then we can go our separate ways. I... can probably figure out my way to the school at that point.
no subject
Either way, following along once she gestures!]
If you would like to take that route, I wouldn't mind it. Still... I wouldn't wish for you to walk the streets on your own, either. I may not be a very apt fighter, but there is a small amount of safety in number, correct? So if you would allow me to stay by your side until you reach that building...

[ It's her natural reaction to say that with the usual Misfit gait that comes with it. The Misfits aren't here and even though she is one and has always been, getting out of near death situations only seems to work when it's about taking Jem and the Holograms down.
Never when it has to do with things like this. She's learned that much. Mary chuckles, lowering her head. ]
Sorry. I'd definitely be alright with that! I'll make sure it's quick. You've definitely gotta find your sister.
no subject
You don't need to apologize at all... But thank you. I'm certain that we have enough time to accomplish both.
[This said with a relatively bright smile.]
Should we go now?
no subject
Yeah. I'll go down first.
[ She once again tucks the robot arm underneath her own and looks over the edge. The ladder slips into darkness and for all she knows, someone could be waiting there to attack them. She can't stay up here the entire time though, she has friends to find. They matter the most. She has to do everything she can to find them and make sure they're safe.
It takes her fifteen seconds to figure out how to not drop the arm, seeing how far apart the rungs are so she won't misstep and slip, and getting a feel for going down backwards before she begins her descent. ]
no subject
Is everything going all right? Do you need any help...?
[Probably should have offered that earlier but better late than never...! Kaoru leans over the roof edge a little further, pulling both hands away to curl over the side. After another second, though, one hand will shoot out toward her, more of a warning gesture than actually trying to grab.]
Ah— Wait a second. [The words come out in a frantic whisper.] Don't move.
no subject
[ Her breath catches in her throat when she gets the warning. Mary's eyebrows furrow as she freezes in place, just barely meeting Kaoru's gaze with a look of worry. Mary listens for anything down there — a scuffle of feet, a whisper, some sort of sign that there's someone alive down there and wether she should climb her way back up. At least then they would have the advantage of a smaller space.
Her hands are holding onto the rungs so tightly that she doesn't realize the arm is slipping until it does. She tries to reach out to grab it with her hand, but it's already too far away from her grip. She steadies herself on the ladder, her forehead pressed against a rung as she closes her eyes and waits for it to clatter on the ground.
She hopes they won't kill her. ]
no subject
Not wanting to draw further attention, Kaoru is quick to tuck the lantern away again and then leans down further, both hands extended toward Mary. She won't be ditched, at least...! True Miracles™.]
Here, grab hold—
[It's an even quieter whisper than before, but Kaoru is leaning close enough now so that Mary will still likely be able to catch it.]
no subject
Mary curses under her breath as she climbs over the edge, holding on to Kaoru's hand for dear life. Her voice is oddly calm for the impending doom that's coming for them. ]
What are we gonna do?! We don't have any weapons— I know I can't jumping buildings either.
no subject
Please look on the other side for a ladder. I believe that I saw something here that we might be able to make use of, so I'll check quickly.
[At which point Kaoru will attempt to let go and move back over to the ladder that she used. Nothing can be done if Mary is looking, which is why that request had been made even though Kaoru knows there isn't a ladder on the other side. There is a rain pipe that can be scaled down onto a dumpster if enough care is taken, though.
As long as Mary does leave to take a look, Kaoru can ensure that the clowns will have no easy way up, too. Leaning over the side of the building and grasping onto both sides of the ladder, one great heave is enough to pry it from the wall, sending a shower of bolts and old, flaking metal down onto their potential assailants. The entire structure will then be unceremoniously dropped to the side, though Kaoru withdraws with a startled noise like something else has caused the ladder to collapse.]
no subject
Finds herself at a loss of words at hearing the ladder break to pieces. A million different thoughts race though her mind: was it because no one was using it for a long time so it finally gave out? Did her scramble upwards knock it loose? Was the multitude of weight of those people too much for it? Whatever the answer is, she doesn't seem to care because the problem is fixed.
Mary walks over and stops as she looks down. The clang of the ladder and the angered grunts mixed with creepy laughter makes her wonder if she's in some kind of Hollywood movie rather than her reality. She blinks a couple of times and looks toward Kaoru. ]
That... was the only ladder.
no subject
...I don't know whether to count that as being fortunate or not. They won't be able to get up, presumably... ["Presumably" because these clowns seem capable of some weird shit. On the other hand:] But how will we be able to get back down?
[A LEGITIMATE CONCERN. ...Not for Kaoru, but probably for Mary!]
no subject
[ She looks down at where the ladder once was, looking concerned. It's not so much the problem of being stuck up here for some time, but if this thing goes on longer than anyone wants... then they're gonna be stuck up here the entire time without the ability to call for help. That would be great if it didn't include starving to death or not being able to find her friends.
She looks back to Kaoru, shaking her head. Her face looks paler than it usually is. ]
I—I don't know. If there's a pipe or something, maybe we can shimmy down it...?
no subject
Let's search, then. If there are pipes, they should be at the corners, right? I'll check the ones on this side. [A gesture toward the side with the ladder. There aren't any pipes on that side, but if there were, it would pose an issue that Kaoru would need to take care of. If they could shimmy down, those clowns could shimmy up...
But after checking both corners, it turns up nothing. Facing Mary again, Kaoru calls out at a low volume.]
I can't find anything on this side. What about yours?
no subject
There's something here... [ Mary taps a finger to test the sound. There is a soft tink when she does; it's a sound that wouldn't be heard by anyone below. ] It sounds a little hollow. That means it's gotta be a pipe, right?
[ She stands up, looks at her hands, and then wipes them on her shirt. ] You think they'd have some more advanced piping by now if that's the case.
no subject
Mm... Most likely, then. [They could always double check with the lanterns, of course, but Kaoru won't be doing that just yet in case there are more masked assailants waiting below for a light.]
Do you think that it will withstand an attempt to climb down?
no subject
I fell off a bridge in Italy once. The only thing missing here's the water. [ Her socialization of being with the Misfits causes a temporary lapse in giving an answer to a question. Her demeanor doesn't change and a strange air of confidence envelops her. ] I'm sure I'll manage.
Will you be alright doing it?
no subject
I believe so. I'll do my best... Should I go first?
no subject
I... I'll go. I think this time will be a little easier without something to drop. Uh, besides ourselves, I mean.
no subject
As long as you'll be all right... I'll stay over the ledge this time in case you need help.
[With arms held down, that is, so she'll have something to grab hold of.]
no subject
[ She flashes a smile and heaves herself over the edge. Her feet dangle off it as she tries to gauge where the ground is beneath her, but for all she knows it could be ten feet down or fifty. Mary takes a deep breath and clasps her hands around the pipe.
Having the good sense to put on sneakers when the lights started to go out, she eases herself down the pole with her feet against the wall. Mary's in full concentration mode as she climbs down, waiting in between each small slide to listen for anything. It sounds quiet and she doesn't hear any footsteps, so she continues onward.
The closer she gets to the ground the more anxious she feels. For all she knows, someone could be standing there with a weapon, waiting to kill her and take her lantern.
Her throat feels tight.
She nearly trips when she reaches the bottom because she doesn't suspect it to be so close and catches herself before she falls on her ass. As she takes a look around, she doesn't see any shadowy figures waiting to get them. She listens again for anything that might be nearby, but when she figures the coast is clear she looks up.
It's hard to see Kaoru all the way up there. Even so, she taps her fingernails against the pipe to signal that she's down on the ground. ]
